Artist Statement
For the last two years I have been compiling a body of work that addresses aspects of death and decay. This year I have been particularly concerned with the altered aesthetics that are wrought by the transformation from functionality to obsolescence. Each stage of the discarded through disintegration and decomposition holds its own fascination and perverted beauty. I am inspired by the intimate details of the insignificant, the textures, stains and patina that record the passage of time and the effect of the elements. There is a gentle melancholy about many of the objects I choose to photograph; memories and signifiers of former splendour cling to the crumbling surfaces. But often the discarded transmogrifies from everyday and mundane into an object of sumptuous splendour.
Much of my work is made using a macro lens, deploying a very shallow depth of field. The resulting narrow band of focus presents new perspectives and opens up new worlds to explore. I wish to challenge the viewer to re-visit the familiar. I shoot in natural light and the quality of the light has an important part to play in these transformations. It is the last low golden rays of the dying sun that bring the dead and decaying back to life, a life transformed.
